Losing muscle

These trials are only to test your faith, to show that it is strong and pure. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold-and your faith is far more precious to God than mere gold. So if your faith remains strong after being tried by fiery trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world. I Peter 1:7
Oh my armpits hurt!
Twenty-two measly pushups-”girl’s pushups” at that- and I had to take a rest in between sets-and my pecs really hurt.
Last fall I began the 100 pushup challenge, a free, online 6-week program with the goal of doing 100 pushups. First day I did 18 pushups-and paid for it dearly with sore pits. But by week three I was up to 44 pushups total. I felt so much stronger. Then life got crazy and I stopped. Amazing how quickly one loses muscle and strength when one stops working out consistently, purposely. I’m basically back to where I started four months ago!
Isn’t that the same way it goes with our Christian walk? Just like quickly losing muscle when one stops exercising, how quickly we fall away from God when we stop making it a priority to consistently, purposely spend time with God in prayer, Bible study and/or meditation.
It shouldn’t be – but it is a challenge to make time to meditate – at least it is for me. Just like it can be a challenge to find the time/energy/desire to work out. It’s all a matter of our priorities. We will find time for what is truly important to us.
Ouch! Now that hurts too.
